Secondary packaging, definition and operation

Designed to cover the primary packaging, the secondary packaging is used to group several items together, simplifying product handling for the end customer, as well as for the retailer who displays it on the shelf. Once these products have been brought together by the secondary packaging, they become what can be called a "sales unit", or SVU.

Secondary packaging can take many forms: separator, paper, bag, box, cushion, plastic film... its final form depends only on the products you wish to assemble. While secondary packaging can be removed when the product goes on sale, it can also be kept and used as a marketing tool to enhance the value and visibility of the final product.
